A Piece Of History

The Fontaine de la Fosse is a significant historical monument that was originally installed in Mouilleron-en-Pareds and later moved to the Chassenon castle park in 1856. It was commissioned by Jacques Le Venier and created by sculptor Léonard de la Réau, and is composed of two levels of elevation with an antique-inspired vocabulary, topped by a dome and a lantern. Its importance in illustrating Renaissance art in Vendée led to its classification as a historical monument in 1956.
In 1999, a storm caused a giant cedar to fall on the fountain, breaking it into pieces. In 2016, new owners Roderic and Elisabeth van Praet d’Amerloo expressed their desire to see the monument returned to Chassenon and contacted the DRAC to begin the rebuilding process.
The project to rebuild the fountain was guided by the principles of the Venice Charter of 1964, which aimed to preserve both the artwork and the historical evidence of the monument. The careful reconstruction process aimed to reveal the work and its authenticity by conserving as many existing stones as possible and reconstructing it identically without extrapolation.
The fountain is now open to the public and serves as a key piece of Vendée history. To learn more, click on the link below.
